West Glendive/Dawson County, Montana

Directional Drill Under Yellowstone River and Lift Station

The West Glendive wastewater treatment facility, owned and operated by Dawson County, consisted of a two-cell facultative lagoon system discharging to a side channel of the Yellowstone River under an MPDES permit. In 2009, DEQ issued a new discharge permit with many new monitoring requirements, permit limits, and a compliance schedule for required improvements. Dawson County contracted with Great West Engineering to evaluate options to meet the compliance schedule and regulatory obligations. Ultimately, the County determined the best solution was to connect the system to the City of Glendive’s wastewater treatment system, thereby eliminating the need for the existing treatment lagoons and the related discharge permit requirements. The project included directional drilling beneath the Yellowstone River to connect West Glendive’s system to the City of Glendives’ treatment plant, which required extensive permitting. Great West completed design and construction services for the project, which was completed in the fall of 2017.
